Q’s about BOOKING
How far in advance should I book a campervan rental?
This all depends on the season! If you are looking for an extended trip in peak summer months from May-September it is advised to book your campervan rental around February. This will ensure that you get the van and dates desired. However, if you are booking for shoulder/off-season times you probably don’t have to book as promptly. One month in advance should be plenty.
Are there any restrictions on crossing international borders with the campervan?
Q Campervan insurance packages allow for renters to go anywhere in Canada and USA! However, going to Mexico is not allowed. If you are an international traveller, you may need an IDP to drive in certain USA states.
Which U.S.A States require International Drivers Permits? (IDP) What about Canada?
Not every U.S. state requires an IDP. Some states like Washington, Idaho, and Montana are a few that may require an IDP. Please contact each state here if you plan to drive in to see if they require an IDP. Canada does not require IDP’s. Click here for a helpful map resource to determine if you need an IDP or not.
When are the reservation amounts due? Security Deposit?
When you book a Q Campervan, a 25% deposit of the total reservation amount is due immediately. The rest will be collected 14 days prior to your reservation (you will get an email reminder). The refundable security deposit is due 2 days prior to your reservation. The amount of the security deposit varies, but ranges from $700-$900 depending on which van you have booked.
Is there a minimum/maximum rental period for campervans?
At Q Campervans, our minimum rental period is 3 nights (4 days). However, you may book 1-2 nights, just note that you will be charged the 3 night minimum unless otherwise approved. Please contact us if you are looking for a 2 night rental, as it may be approved.
There is NO maximum rental period at Q Campervans! We can accomodate extended trips, but do note oil-changes/inspections may be required during your trip if the distance/time away is significant. (paid for by Q Campervans)
Are there any additional fees or charges I should be aware of when booking a campervan rental?
Although most companies have a seemingly endless list of “add-ons”, Q Campervans likes to keep it simple. This means all-inclusive pricing. The standard booking includes just a few charges. Nightly price, Insurance + Roadside Asst, Prep fee, and Taxes. Everything that you should need for your trip in regards to the campervan is included. This includes shower, fridge, porti-potti, induction cooktop, cleaning and cooking supplies, linens and towels, heated blankets, camping chairs, etc.
What is there a kilometer limit? If any?
A Q Campervan rental allows for 200km/day, where mileage overages are $.40/km, and pre-purchased km’s are $.35/km. If not pre-purchased, the charge will be subtracted from your refundable security deposit upon campervan return.
Can you delivery the van to my location?
Delivery costs $5/km away from our location and can be added to the booking. You can select delivery upon checkout or contact Quennel and let him know the delivery address. Only deliveries around Greater Vancouver will be accepted.
Where are pick-ups/drop-offs?
They are located at Moody Centre Skytrain Station in Port Moody. There is tons of parking here ($3/day) and provides an easy transportation option to pick-up and drop-offs with the Skytrain being right there. The train goes all the way downtown and also connects to the YVR airport!
Are one-way rentals allowed?
If you would like to purchase a one-way rental, please contact us. We do not typically book one-way rentals as it is quite hard logistically. Quennel will charge for time, gas, flights, administrative scheduling and any other costs related to retrieving the van back to Vancouver, BC.
Are there any age or driver restrictions for renting a campervan?
To rent a Q Campervan, there must be at least one person 25 years of age or older in your reservation with a valid drivers license. International drivers licences are acceptable! Upon booking, you will have to verify your license in order for insurance to apply. Additional drivers can be added to the booking for free.
How many people can a Q Campervan rental sleep/seat?
All Q Campervans with the exception of “Marvin” sleep and seat 2 people. “Marvin” can sleep 4 (2 adults, 2 small children). For each child added to the booking it is $15/night when reserving “Marvin”.
I have purchased third-party insurance, do I still need to use your campervan insurance?
It is the most simple for Q Campervans to only deal with 1 insurance company for bookings. Every third-party may have different coverages and policies, so we want to skip this complication. Insurance is very complicated for campervans and we want to keep it as simple for both the renter and ourselves. This is why we require our insurance packages to be purchased in every booking.
What insurance package do you recommend at check-out?
There are 3 packages that we offer. “Basic”, “Essential”, and “Peace of Mind”. Q Campervans always recommends purchasing the “Basic” coverage because it actually provides the best value for the nightly price. If you would like to take a detailed look at what each policy includes click here.
Why is roadside assistance required in a Q Campervan booking? What if I have my own? (BCAA, Credit card coverage, etc)
Roadside assistance is required because Q Campervans wants to ensure that all renters are taken care of in the event of an incident. Given that the vans travel great distances away from Vancouver, having the peace of mind not only for Q Campervans but all our renters, is important. Furthermore, in places like Banff and Jasper, finding assistance is not always easy given the limited amount of mechanical shop availability.
If you have your own roadside assistance, then Q Campervans can waive the roadside assistance required in the booking. Just message us to remove it from the booking.
Are pets allowed in a Q Campervan rental?
Yes! We want your pets to enhance your experience! So be sure to bring them along. However, only well-trained pets are allowed. There are pet-related damage fees when the vehicle is brought back. So if you don’t trust your pet to be well-behaved, then potentially don’t bring them. The potential fee is at minimum $100 per Q Campervans rental contract.
What is your cancelation policy?
75% refund up to 7 days before pickup, then 50% refund for remaining days
Q’s during your trip
We are new to vanlife. Is there assistance available to help us understand how everything works and get oriented?
Yes! At pick-up Quennel will go over the ENTIRE van, how everything works, give advice, answer any questions, and even go for a test drive for you.
How many km’s can a tank of gas? What is the gas mileage of each vehicle? Any diesel vans?
All the gas vehicles have roughly the same fuel efficiency. Our vans Henry, Fred, Lenny, Marvin, and Rocky will get about 700 km on a single tank. The tanks are 130 litres. This equates to about 14-18L/100km depending on the driving you are doing. Highway driving is obviously more fuel efficient.
Big Blue is the only diesel campervan rental we have currently. He will get about 900-950 km on the same 130 L tank. His fuel economy ranges from 12-15L/100km depending on the driving type.
Is a Q Campervan difficult to drive?
This is one of the main reasons Q Campervans loves the Ford Econoline model for rentals! They are very easy to drive. Often my renters come back from their trip and say how quickly they got used to driving their van. Furthermore, if you are worried about driving, Quennel is more than happy to take some extra time at pick-up to ensure you feel comfortable. Quennel goes through the entire van upon pick-up, which includes the driving components. Don’t hesitate to ask for a test drive with him!
Am I allowed to take the van off-roads? (any road that is not paved)
Q Campervans has a “no off-roading” policy. On the west coast there are plenty of forestry/logging roads that can be very hard on the vehicles. If you are looking to do significant off-roading, it would be better to contact an overland rental company to assist you. If you are taking a short dirt/gravel road to and from a campsite, this is not a problem.
Should I book campsites in advance?
YES! As a general rule, always book campsites in advance. May-September is consistently packed with locals and tourists looking to secure a campsite. There are release dates for national and provincial campsites, so be sure to look these up. For more information about campsites and finding good ones, please click here.
Can I camp for free?
Yes, it is possible to find good places to park for free! In very touristy areas like Banff, Jasper, Revelstoke, Whistler, and Tofino, it will be quite difficult to find nice spots for free. This is mainly due to the sheer volume of people trying to park overnight in various spots. You may see signs saying “No overnight parking” or “No camping”. Wherever you park, please ensure that you obey posted signage and respect the locals. To see a blog post about this subject and resources you can use to find “free-camping”, please click here.
Will we run out of power in the van? Will it need to be plugged in at a campsite?
All Q Campervans come with 300ah of self-heated lithium-ion phosphate battery power. It is extremely difficult to use the complete battery and “run out” of charge. There are 3 methods of charging, solar, alternator power, and shore power. This means the main sources of charging are the sun and driving the vehicle. Those 2 methods prevent any serious need to “plug-in” the van at a campsite. However, if needed, an extension cord is provided so you can charge the van. The plug in will provide 10 amps of power. Very, very rarely do renters run out of electric power or even come close.
What should I do if I encounter any issues or problems with the campervan?
If you have any trouble with the campervan or the booking in general, please contact Quennel immediately. Although we go to GREAT lengths to ensure that every rental goes smoothly, it is inevitable that problems may arise. You can call/text at (+1) 778-858-8863, DM on Instagram @q_campervans, or email at campervanq@gmail.com. Because Quennel has hand-built all the campervans, he knows everything about them, and can provide technical assistance. Furthermore, he can work with roadside assistance to serve you quicker!
What is the procedure for emptying the waste tanks and maintaining sanitation in the campervan?
For dumping the porti-potti, the most convenient way is to dump the tank at a “out-house”/park washroom. The porti-potti is easy to carry. Please flush the tank out with water, and dump immediately after the first to get rid of any residual waste. The rentals come with pods that disintegrate the RV toilet paper and waste. If the porti-potti is not dumped upon return, it is an additional charge.
Can I extend my rental period if I decide to stay longer?
Yes! If Q Campervans has dates available, we are certainly able to extend your booking. Please contact Quennel about extending your reservation!
How do the vans do in the cold? And the heat?
In the winter, demand is far lower so Q Campervans has decided to not invest in Diesel heaters as most bookings come from the spring-fall months. Despite this, every booking comes with a heated blanket + extra blankets if requests. This will keep you nice and cozy at night :) All our vans are insulated with sheeps wool, so this helps to keep the heat in the van.
During the summer it can get hot! However, because of the sheeps wool insulation and the roof fan the vans will stay cool for a long time even when the A/C from the van itself is off.
Before returning the van, is there anything we need to do?
There are a couple things! 1. Make sure the fuel is full 2. Remove all personal belongings 3. Empty the porti-potti. Everything else will be handled by Quennel upon return.
How long before I get my security deposit back?
We try to work as fast as possible to return the security deposit. Usually within 24-48 hours. Sometimes within 4 hours of return!
